When the Colnago CX Zero came out, the rim brake version was built after the disc brake version. Now that the CX Zero has been on the road for some time, Colnago saw how it could be improved for rim brakes. The result is the CX Zero Evo Frameset.

The CX Zero is Colnago’s top endurance frame. Endurance is a modern term for calling it a classic road frame. Taller head tube with shorter top tube means less flexible riders or those who prefer to have their hands and head higher can have an easy time finding a comfortable, powerful position. While many might think of this as a “classics,” or Paris-Roubaix frame, it’s also the daily tool of several riders on the Europcar team. These riders have not only taken the frame to the classics and Roubaix, but use it at the Tour de France and plenty of other stage races. They use it because they like it; sometimes the choice is that simple.

Carbon-fiber is a popular material for building frames because it is easier to manipulate than metal. Cloth and resin create really thin layers, and by moving the material around, putting more here and less there, the characteristics of any frame can be very finely tuned. So it is with the Evo. Because rim brakes put different demands on frame than rotor brakes, Colnago could remove both aluminum and carbon from the rim brake design. And even with this material removed, they could move around the remaining material to better counteract forces both rider and brakes put on the machine. The result is a frame that’s approximately 60g lighter per frame, 10% stiffer at the head tube, and 15% stiffer at the bottom bracket. The bike is an even better climber and is more efficient in its power transfer.

The comfort factor is not to be minimized. The long, curved chain stays function like the curve in traditional forks. It’s a way to dissipate vibrations without lengthening the wheelbase. The thin seat stays further this vibration damping. And the seat post is a traditional 27.2mm round post, also for comfort.

Even with the taller head tube, shorter top tube, and stays designed for comfort, the geometry still provides a fast, confident ride. This bike feels like a racer when you’re going 60kph in a tight bunch barreling towards the flamme rouge, but it still rides predictably when bouncing over rough or gravel roads. In fact, you can fit tires up to 28mm in diameter into the frame without issue.

Even if there’s something old-school about a bike that takes on terrible roads and can be ridden all day, the frameset is modern in terms of how you can set it up. The cables are routed internally, making it easy to swap between electronic and mechanical. If you go electronic, the battery can be mounted internally or under the bottom bracket. The bottom bracket standard is BB86, allowing Colnago to both save weight and increase stiffness. The headset is Colnago’s proprietary design, with 1 1/8” and 1 ¼” bearings sitting in replaceable aluminum cups which can protect the frame in the event of a crash or poor adjustment. The seatpost is from Colnago, made of carbon, possesses 15mm of setback and is included with the frame, along with the seat clamp.

The Colnago CX-Zero Evo possesses a beautiful retro ride accomplished with the most modern of designs.

Everyone has his or her idea of how to get to fast. If you’re the kind of person who wants a bike that feels comfy when hammering, the Colnago CX Zero is your bike. In some circles, this bike is put in the “endurance” pen. Since bike riding, and bike racing, are all about endurance, Colnago refers to this geometry as “classic.”  This means a slightly taller head tube and slightly shorter top tube than is currently en vogue at the pro level, but for short-torsoed pro’s or pro riders with normal flexibility, this frame sits very much in the sweet spot of the ideal geometry.

The CX Zero is the race bike to choose if you value comfort over the feedback of every crack in the road. The design is stable and compliant while offering incredible lateral stiffness to better translate leg power into vehicular speed. Colnago designed the CX Zero geometry as their northern classics bike, a bike that limits the road inputs while still offering great steering precision, but the comfortable ride translates well to all conditions. Some of their pro riders use this as their main race bike. It's not surprising. If you feel comfortable, it's easy to lay down the power.

Having one bike for all roads makes the CX Zero, in a sense, workmanlike. That’s because you can beat it like a rented mule every day, and it will still look good and ride good, no matter how hard the roads, how stiff the wind, how unforgiving the external environments.

They accomplished this feat by doing more than just increasing stack and reducing reach. The sloping top tube that’s flattened does its bit. So, too, the round 27.2mm seatpost. The small-diameter seatstays help, and the final bit of aid are the curved chainstays. They kind of look like a traditional fork. The curve does the same job,  allowing for vertical movement by the dropouts, but preventing lateral movement from pedaling.

While the chainstays have vertical flex designed in, the bottom bracket juncture is oversized to prevent torsional flex from robbing you of pedaling efficiency. They even went so far as to design the bottom bracket around the BB86 standard, figuring that having the carbon-fiber going out that far wide does a better job of bracing the stays, further limiting lateral movement.

As you’d expect with Colnago, the headset is their proprietary semi-integrated design, supporting a tapered steerer tube and the bearings sitting in replaceable cups. The bearings are supplied by FSA, with an 1 1/8” race at the top and 1 ¼” at the bottom. They also route the cables internally, and the system allows for the easy switching to electronic shifting if you ever desire to make that upgrade. When you go electronic, the battery can be run internally or externally.

The CX Zero softens up the rough roads so you can keep the pace high.
